Specialized Chemistry Center
Program Summary
As described by the NIH, "The Molecular Libraries Program (MLP), a component of the NIH Common Fund, offers public sector biomedical researchers access to the large-scale screening capacity necessary to identify small molecules that can be optimized as chemical probes to study the functions of genes, cells, and biochemical pathways. The Molecular Libraries Probe Production Centers Network (MLPCN), as part of the MLP, is a nationwide consortium of small molecule centers that produces innovative chemical tools for use in biological research." In September 2008, the University of Kansas received a six-year, $20.2 million research award from the National Institutes of Health to establish a Specialized Chemistry Center (KU SCC). As part of the NIH MLPCN, the mission of the KU SCC was to develop probes based on hits uncovered in NIH screening efforts. This project ended in May 2015.
Program Information
Core A: Administration
Core A was responsible for the coordination of all scientific activities of the Specialized Chemistry Core, manage personnel and intellectual property matters, and administer its budget.
Core B: Synthesis/Purification Core
Core B was responsible for planning and executing medicinal chemistry projects presented to the SCC by the MLPCN leadership with the aid of core C (which provided computational chemistry and cheminformatics support ), by purifying compounds and providing essential analytical chemistry validation, and coordinating the submission of compounds to the compound repository.
Core C: Cheminformatics Core
Core C applied a series of computational protocols to efficient delivery of chemical insight that guided targeted synthesis of hit analogs with elevated prospects for achieving probe status.
