Dave VanderVelde Awarded KU Research Achievement Award

The first annual KU Research Achievement award, recently initiated by Vice Provost for Research James Roberts, was presented to Dr. David VanderVelde by Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere in a research convocation held at Alderson Auditorium. The award consists of $10,000 (on deposit at the KU Center for Research) and a plaque honoring the achievement. The funds may be spent over five years for research materials, salary, matching funds, equipment, travel, research assistants or any other purpose that is consistant with the advancement of the individual's research program.

The award was presented in recognition of outstanding research achievement to an academic staff researcher working in the categories of basic and applied research. Dr. VanderVelde's research was characterized as "having significant influence in his field and as representing a productive record of important research that has expanded intellectual or societal insights."

Dr. VanderVelde is a member of the Chemical Methodologies & Library Development (KU-CMLD) Steering Committee, and a co-PI for the Library Design and Analysis Core. He is also the Director of the KU Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory. His research interests include applications of NMR to solve chemical and phamaceutical problems, specifically in the field of conformationally flexible molecules and their response to environmental changes. Within the CMLD, he has been working on aspects of automated NMR analysis and analytical information management.
