| Hill's Pet Nutrition- Diversifying Kansas Biotechnology since 1939
That simple mission statement has led Hill’s Pet Nutrition from 1939, when Dr. Mark L Morris, Sr. developed the first Hill's Prescription Diet product, to present day. This Topeka-based company created the new industry of clinical nutrition when Dr. Morris developed the world's first pet food designed to help dogs with kidney disease. His inspiration came after speaking with a young blind man named Morris Frank, who asked if anything could be done to save his guide dog, Buddy, who was suffering from kidney failure. Out of this request Dr. Morris developed Prescription Diet k/d. Today Hill’s Prescription Diet brand offers a full line of prescribed pet food for dogs and cats needing special nutrition due to specific diseases. In addition Hill’s offers a complete line of wellness pet food under the brand, Science Diet. According to Hill’s Pet Nutrition: “Dr Morris' commitment to Morris and Buddy became the foundation for our company’s mission.” Hill’s contributes to the veterinary community in many ways, beginning with their support of veterinary colleges worldwide. This support includes donating pet food at no charge to selected veterinary colleges, awarding scholarships to veterinary school students, and by supporting national student associations, including SAVMA (Student American Veterinary Medical Association). On top of that, Hill’s is a sponsor of the International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA). Much like the company’s Higuchi Biosciences Center’s Life Sciences Work Force Development program (see Q4 2005 newsletter), Hill’s also teams up with veterinarians to offer postgraduates, technicians and breeder groups seminars designed “to keep practicing professionals on top of the latest developments in the field of clinical nutrition.” As one of over 100 northeast Kansas companies in the bioscience field, Hill’s has been in Topeka since 1906. (It would not be until the late 1940’s that Hill Packing Company of Topeka would later work with Dr. Morris to become Hill’s Pet Nutrition.) Topeka is home to Hill’s world headquarters, one of their manufacturing facilities, and their leading research and development center. The staff includes veterinarians, board-certified specialists in nutrition and internal medicine, and leading nutritional scientists. Hill’s Pet Nutrition takes pride in knowing the company isn’t just making high quality pet nutrition product. It is carrying on the tradition of caring and innovation that began so long ago with Buddy and Dr. Morris. To find out more about Hill's, please go to their website at http://www.hillspet.com.
