Chemistry Ranks High in Women Hires

An article in the October issue of Chemical & Engineering News said that not only is KU's chemistry department ranked among the top 50 in the U.S., it also has the highest percentage of women professors. Though Kristin Bowman-James said KU hired its first woman chemistry professor in 1921, it did not hire a woman faculty member again until her hire in 1975. During her stint as chairman of the department, BowmanJames actively recruited women. That trend has not changed.

The seven chemistry professors and two courtesy professors from other departments are Helena C. Malinakova, Heather Desaire, Janet Bond-Robinson, Kristin Bowman-James, K. Barbara Schowen, Cynthia K. Larive, Gunda I. Georg (medicinal chemistry), Susan Lunte (pharmaceutical chemistry), and Cindy L. Berrie. •
